Wine and HDL

In a study of over 220 type 2 diabetes patients regularly consuming a Mediterranean diet, the patients who also drank a 150ml glass of red wine with dinner had higher HDL levels than those who drank mineral water. Since HDL can help a body stave off strokes and heart attacks, the implication of these studies are hopeful, to say the least.

Oddities

Restaurants are theater, and wine is an important part of the play. But too many restaurants ham it up: sommeliers in tuxes and ruffled shirts, with chains and medallions draped around them; vast leather-bound wine lists filled with gothic script and pictures of v vineyards; elaborate and silly bottle-opening antics; decanting wine that doesn't need it.

The Restaurant ritual

Assuming you have negotiated the ordering process, a waiter will appear with a bottle of wine and hold it out for you. Don't take it from him. This is merely his way of asking you to check that the label actually shows what you asked for. He will next remove the cork, sniff it and present it to you. You could sniff it as well, but since this is unlikely to tell you anything instructive, I would not recommend it. Far better to just say "thank you." The waiter will pour a sample. Take a deep breath, checking the wine for cork taint. If all is well, taste it to be sure. Nod wisely and say something like "ah yes, the '67. Unmistakeable." When this ritual is completed, he will go ahead and pour the wine.

Hangover victims

For the hangover sufferer, the world is full of well-wishers anxious to persuade them that Jack Daniel's and milk, or some similarly unlikely combination really does the trick. I feel confident in stating that, aside from the ludicrously unhelpful suggestion to abstain, there is no cure. Eventually you will get better anyway, so why waste the little effort available to you on spurious remedies? Having that said, of course, there are certain things that help speed up the recovery process. These are pretty well-known, let's get through them quickly:  sleep, water, food, more alcohol ("the hair of the dog that bit you.")
All undoubtedly useful in suppressing the symptoms of a hangover, but there's always the possibility that they may backfire in some way.

Celebrity Wines

These days, celebrity wineries are a dime a dozen - everyone from Antonio Banderas to Nicki Minaj have slapped their name on a bottle. Whether they've actually bought a vineyard or have partnered with an esteemed vintner, actors like John Legend, Drew Barrymore, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, sports stars like Joe Montana and Dwayne Wade, and even President Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi have all set up shop in wine regions like Provence, Napa and Bordeaux. But be warned: star power doesn't always translate into good wine.  So look around and check them out before you splurge.
