Somlo wine from Austria

A famous legend gives this wine the name of "Wine of the Wedding Night." The legend says that if the newlyweds drink Somlo during their wedding night and do not fall asleep after the last guest has left, they will likely conceive a son. The Hapsburgs Imperial family who previously reigned over several European countries are credited with this story.  Specifically, Maria Theresa of Austria is said to have ordered her son to drink this beverage to continue the family line.

of wasps and wine

Wasps love grapes. When the fruits ripen in the summer, the bugs chow down and fly back to their nests, where they give the masticated mush to their larvae.

When they eat the fruit, the insects ingest the yeast, and their stomachs provide the perfect environment for it to survive the frosty months. More importantly, when wasps feed their young, they pass the fungus to their babies. That way, when the larvae mature, they reintroduce S. cerevisiae to the vineyards and start the process all over again.

Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans."

Wine facts

Did you know that humans originally consumed wine for the express purpose of purifying water? If you blend 10% to 25% of wine with water and let it sit for 30 minutes, you can drink that creek water. Or so I'm told. As of now, I am not keen to be the guinea pig, I think I will just stick with the wine.
