"Wine had such ill effects on Noah's health that it was all he could do to live 950 years. Now show me a total abstainer that ever lived that long."
The Bishop of Seville
"I have enjoyed great health at a great age because every day since I can remember, I have consumed a bottle of wine except when I have not felt well, and then I have consumed two bottles," (Right on Bishop, my kinda guy!)
Being Biblical
Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do."
Ecclesiastes 9:7
Sean Connery as James Bond, Goldfinger
"My dear girl, there are some things that just aren't done, such as drinking Dom Perignon '53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That's just as bad as listening to the Beatles with earmuffs."
An Irish fairy story
The Irish believe that fairies are extremely fond of good wine. The proof of this assertion is that in the olden days, Royalty would leave a keg of wine out for them at night. Sure enough, it was always gone in the morning.
Wine and sex - really?
For the ladies, red wine causes the sex drive to be even more pronounced than with other drinks, at least according to a group of Italian researchers, who discovered that the compounds in the wine actually enhance levels of sexual desire in the fairer sex. What they discovered was that red wine especially increased blood flow to women's erogenous areas, which in turn led to increased levels of desire. For men, not only does a glass or two loosen things up and increase blood flow to essential areas, but red wine also seems to increase levels of testosterone in the blood, a necessary hormone when it comes to male sexual arousal and "appetite."
More wine history
While the exact origins of winemaking (and, thus, of pressing grapes) are not known, most archaeologists believe that it originated somewhere in the Transcaucasia between the Black and Caspian Seas in the land that now includes the modern countries of Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran. There are stories in the Imeretin Valley (in what is now Krasnodar Krai, Russia) dating to between 7000-5000 BC of early winemaking using hollowed out logs that they would fill with grapes, tread with their feet and then scoop the juice and crushed grape remains into jars to ferment. In the 17th century, French traveller Sir Jean Chardin would describe a similar practice still in use thousands of years later in Georgia
Health properties of wine
Recent studies by Jennifer Wiley, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois in Chicago, show that a few glasses of wine can actually relax our brains and allow us to think more clearly. In a separate study, she also found that the same amount of wine aids in creative problem solving, which is why brainstorming sessions with the team at happy hour often produce fantastic results
January lst 2017
My greetings and best wishes to all on this first day of a new year. A year that I face with optimism and maybe a smidgin of trepidation as to what may be in store But I face it with the knowledge that I have some good people behind me and my team. I am excited to know that Mrs. McCartney's Wines and Mrs. McCartney's Teas are both available at The King's Head Pub in Santa Monica, California. I have many great things to look forward to, including a trip to Hawaii to cash in our freebies at the Disney Resort, courtesy of Ellen DeGeneres. So look out 2017 - cover me I'm going in! My first exciting event will be a trip to The Palm Springs International Film Festival in January to attend a screening of Ethel and Ernest, the animated movie which includes a song written by my late husband, Jimmy Mac, which was originally recorded by Paul and Linda, together with Chet Atkins in Floyd Kramer under the name of "The Country Hams." It's called "Walking in the Park With Eloise." Paul also wrote the end title music, and both are on the soundtrack album. Brenda Blethyn and Jim Broadbent voice the two main characters. We will be staying at my beloved Ingleside Inn, for the first time since dear Mel Haber left us a couple of months ago. It will be a bitter sweet occasion but one we have to face.`
The Musings of Emily Bronte
I have dreamed in my life, dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas; they have gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the color of my mind.
